The field of human resources benefits from having a better sense of how to create career paths that propel top employees into leadership positions. Marketing as well benefits because the project contributes to our understanding of the unique skills that female managers bring to the marketing role. Methods of Gathering Information

The following methods of research will be used for completing this project:

Secondary Research

Literature, Internet, and electronic database searches of full-text articles for:

1. The correlation of women CMOs and VPs of Marketing in publically-held companies and their long-term financial performance over time. Statistical analysis of financial results of companies segmented by industries, by gender of the CMO vs. VP of Sales and the resulting long-term effects of leadership education, age and gender will be assessed. Also, the financial performance of these companies will be compared over time. The results will serve as the foundation of the primary research phase of this project.

2. Extensive literature search and review of the topic of gender-based leadership effectiveness over time. This will be an academic literature search covering areas of women's leadership in C-level roles including CMO, CFO and COO.

3. Studying the bios of females in CMO positions, to see if there are any patterns in terms of their education and work experience.

Primary Research

1. Ten in-depth telephone or face-to-face interviews with local business and professional women's organizations will be completed. These interviews will concentrate on what key success...

Interviews with professors in marketing and organizational behavior to evaluate the hypotheses and evaluate research results.
I anticipate the following outcomes:

1. Women's skills at collaboration and communication will emerge as a primary success factor in their ascension to CMO roles in organizations. This would be uncovered in the interviews.

2. Industries are irrelevant, as the skills women bring to this role are transferrable across industries.

3. The factors that may inhibit the success of this program include a lack of respondents in business and professional women's organizations, a lack of potential cooperation with respondents and the need for greater levels of involvement with professors.

4. I expect to be able to make a determination based on analysis of financial statements as to whether or not female marketing heads deliver superior performance.

Knowledge and Skills Need

The five areas of my education that I anticipate applying to the project are:

1. Marketing strategies for careers, defined in the context of each person seeing themselves as a combination of product and services they are marketing to potential employers in the future

2. Organizational behavior to analyze the cultures of companies and their leadership, including acceptance of women leaders

3. Accounting, economics, and finance to help provide a financial perspective of the performance women achieve in companies. In particular, financial statement analysis will be required for this project. There may also be some statistical analysis required as well.

4. Report writing to prepare an effective report, and

5. Presentation skills to prepare and present an effective oral report of the project
