The basis of the modern day labor force rely in the Industrial Revolution, when the people moved from the rural areas to the urban regions, to become employed in factories and search for a better life. Yet, their initial hopes were crushed by exploitation, low wages, improved living conditions, unsafe workplaces and other such abuses (Mokyr, 1985). Gradually however, the people joined forces and formed unions that would fight for the rights of the workers. Despite the initial violent reaction to the unions that was characteristic of factory owners, the law makers came to side with the employees.

Today then, the organizational staff members are the most valuable asset of the economic agents (Brown, Hesketh and Williams, 2004). Today, the employees are no longer simply the force operating the machines and providing manual labor in the factories, but they are the ones who provide intellectual capital, who add value to the firms and who help solve problems and attain organizational goals.
The changing features of the modern day workforce are due to a wide array of changes in the micro and macro environments. At a global level, a trend is observed in that of the increasing number of services as opposed to manufacturing and agriculture. In Canada for instance, 71 per cent of the gross domestic product is generated by the services sector, with the industry generating 27.1 per cent and agriculture contributing with 1.9 per cent (Central Intelligence Agency, 2012).
