Care Plan For Dementia During A Hurricane Evacuation Essay

Practicum Project Teaching Plan The topic for the lesson will be "Care Plan for Dementia During a Hurricane Evacuation". The information presented is vital because most people who suffer from dementia will not recall what has happened and they might be worried when they are advised to evacuate due to a hurricane (Wakui, Agree, Saito, & Kai, 2017). It is possible that during the evacuation they might forget what is happening and they would prefer to remain at their familiar surroundings. It is vital that the caregivers understand the need to prepare appropriately during such an emergency. Therefore, they would need to be given support in terms of knowledge and what to understand in order for the evacuation to be smooth. The target group of learners for this teaching plan are care givers who are charged with disaster preparedness within the community. They will comprise of nurses and community nurses who interact regularly with the elderly within the community.

Literature Review

According to (Ryman et al., 2018) it has been noted that a majority of the care givers who are charged with evacuation of patients in nursing homes do not know the residents. This means that the staff are not aware of the patient’s conditions and the patients are not familiar with the staff, which makes it difficult to evacuate the patients....

Therefore, there is need to ensure that the patients with dementia are prepared in advance in order to reduce negative consequences and support adjustment. People with dementia need to be evacuated or communicated about the evacuation by people with whom they have been interacting with in order to reduce anxiety (Wakui et al., 2017).
