The unique strategies that Wal-Mart relies on for retailing emanate from their expertise in logistics and supply chain management, and the ability to manage pricing exceptionally well as a competitive strength (Appelbaum, Lichtenstein, 2006). The approach to retailing at Wal-Mart is more comparable to the end-point of a supply chain where the distribution center is actually the retail store. This is precisely the model that Wal-Mart relies on to gain process and cost efficiencies from its support and retail staff. It is common for retail staff to be called upon to assist with the unloading of tractor trailers during slow periods on the retail space floor.

Conclusion

The strengths Wal-Mart has in branding, information technologies including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), logistics and supply chain management, and retailing all emanate from their ability to quickly translate market opportunities into supply chain execution strategies.
