Beowulf Having been written somewhere between the 8th and 11th centuries and being one of the best known heroic epic poems, Beowulf certainly makes more recent stories appear less important. The legend deals with the main character as he has to undergo a series of tasks battling the story's three antagonists: Grendel, its mother, and a mysterious dragon that the male protagonist battles during the last moments of his life. It is very probable that the story circulated in a fragmentary version for several years until a particularly experienced poet altered it and brought it in its current state. There is much controversy about the epic because it is very complex and it does not present the public with clear details that they can later identify as belonging to a certain genre.
