Career Counseling: Video Lecture Critique Darryl Cross - Career Guidance Counselling

The video lecture by Darryl Cross offers career guidance counselling to any individual who is unsure of the next move to make for their career or any individual that is not certain as to whether he or she is heading in the right path career-wise. One of the strong suits or most clear points of the video lecture is that if work experience is done well, it can shape and fashion the developing sense of self for any person. Darryl is keen on pointing out that at the present, most people do not do work experience, as it should be at all. One of the clear points delineated is that the adolescence stage is one that encompasses identity, in that individuals ought to find out who they are and what their strengths are. These are not simply subsidiary issues, but rather essential for the reason that if one does not sort out these aspects during this stage, then there is a great likelihood that it will end up haunting them as a kind of mid-life crisis. Darryl is keen and very clear on asserting that work experience ought to be an opportunity or prospect to ascertain whether a job suits a student's or a person's personality. I have to agree with the video lecture that work experience makes the assumption that preceding it, there has been some career assessment or a kind of unearthing of oneself. This is imperative and I have to agree to it that in the present, more often than not, career choices for students are overly influenced by lodged parties, instead of self-awareness and a great deal of pressure emanates commonly from the universities (Cross, 2008).

In the video lecture, Darryl points out four key elements that are deemed significant in determining the strengths and talents of an individual. These are values, personality, interests and work style. However, it is not clear how these four elements work in tandem and entangle each other. For instance, some students might be introverts and extroverts at the same time. More so, most times it states that there are sixteen different personality types. In the same manner, the students might have interests that are far and wide apart. For instance, a student might enjoy calculations and at the same time love geography or history. Lastly, there is also ambiguity in work style. How does someone know how they work, considering they follow routine at the workplace? More so, does this have a hindrance on the individuals that have not worked before or had work experience? These are all elements that have not been clearly pointed out and would require more elucidation and clarity (Cross, 2008).
My interpretation is that, without doubt, the future career plan of an individual has to be structured along his or her strengths and talents. These enables an individual to work out the best career options. More so, it is imperative for one to determine his or her personality as well as typical behaviors, whether at work or in general. This is imperative in order to enable students to advance in their studies and establish the direction that their career ought to follow.
