Nursing Theories

Theory is very important in nursing as it helps with guiding and informing practice, framing approaches, and understanding factors that impact health. Theory aids in enhancing and improving patient care and in supporting professional development. Because there are so many different theories of nursing, however, the judicial application of theory should be supported by evidence-based practice, with principles from nursing theories incorporated in practice once they are verified and validated by evidence. This paper looks at how theories are used in nursing, illustrates their application through my own personal experience, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using theories to guide nursing practice.

Nursing theories can range from broad and abstract grand theories to more specific middle-range theories; all in all, however, they tend to serve as frameworks to understand health, illness, and the human experience within the context of care (Im, 2021). These theories help by offering a systematic way of looking at nursing situations. There are, however, also disadvantages to using theories in practice. Some theories can be too abstract or complex, which makes them difficult to apply in specific clinical situations. There can be a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, which can hinder their effectiveness in day-to-day nursing practice. A rigid adherence to a specific theory can also limit the flexibility needed to adapt to unique patient needs or preferences (Im, 2021).

Overall, theories are important to nursing practice, as they give frameworks that guide care, help with understanding, and can improve patient outcomes. There are challenges to applying theories in practice, but the benefits they offer in terms of structured guidance and improved care quality…
