TOPIC: Health Care Reform

After much public and political debate, in March 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law by President Barack Obama. The PPACA is one of many health care reform efforts that have sought to correct key features of the U.S. health care system such as financing, service delivery, and care coordination. This week, you will examine the passage of PPACA as a milestone along the historical continuum of health care reform in the United States.

To prepare:

Review this week?s Learning Resources and media presentation, reflecting on the evolution of health care in the United States and the public?s response to health care reform efforts historically and currently.

1. Consider: What principal features of the U.S. health care system helped or hindered the enactment of federal health reform in March 2010? What challenges were encountered?

2. How do these conditions and/or challenges reflect characteristics of the policy process and the political environment?

Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:

A. Analyze at least one important feature of the U.S. health care system that is of particular interest to you. Explain why you think this feature is significant in terms of health policy and reform.

B. Describe one or more conditions or challenges specifically related to the passing of the PPACA.
C. Explain how this exemplifies the nature of the policy-making process, and evaluate how it could relate to the question of why health reform in the United States has been so difficult.

In 2 pages and referring to the SG2 Health Care Reform document, answer this question: "What impact will Health Care Reform have on Occupational Therapy?"

Drawing on various sources, explain how one of the classical theories (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics) would resolve the problem. Then, contrast this response with the perspective brought to the issue by relativism, emotivism, or ethical egoism. VARYING DIFFERNCES OF UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE
Abstract
This paper (my project) explores several published articles that report on results from research conducted on Online (Internet) and Offline (non-internet) on the benefits of Americans receiving/participating in Universal Health Care (UHC). The articles, however, vary in their definition in implementing UHC. The Demorcratic government suggest that UHC is more effective than Private Insurer Carriers (PIC), defined andd used as a supplementary coverage for the millions of rejected un-insurable Americans (what are you trying to explain to the reader). Other articles define UHC differently and thedrefore, offer different results?? This paper (this is a project) examines UHC research in relation to several other research articles to suggest that all areas of UHC should be studied in order to fully understand how UHC will influence (impact) and better the llives of all Americans, regardless of their economic ability to pay.
And then I will make recommendations based on my analysis.

Context of the Problem
One-fourth of America's population lives in rural areas. Compared with urban Americans, rural residents have higher poverty rates, a larger percentage of elderly, tend to be in poorer health, have fewer doctors, hospitals, and other health resources, and face more difficulty getting to health services.

Statement of the problem
Hospital closures and other market changes have adversely affected rural areas, leaving State and Federal policymakers, and others concerned about access to health care in rural America. Considerable changes in the health care delivery system over the past decade have intensified the need for new approaches to health care in rural areas. Managed care organizations, for example, may not be developed easily in rural areas, partly because of low population density.
Main Research Questions and Sub-Questions
Can rural health care facilities overcome the ongoing challenges to provide quality medical care to their communities?
The subsequent six research sub questions of this study are formulated in the following way:
1.) Access to care. Many small rural hospitals have closed, while other health care Supply of primary care physicians and other health care providers facilities are in financial straits. Unavailability of resources and transportation problems are barriers to access for rural populations.
2.). The supply of primary care practitioners and other health care providers in rural areas is decreasing. Some are leaving rural areas to join managed care organizations elsewhere.
3.) Health promotion and disease prevention. Goals for improving the Nation's health over the next decade can be achieved only if rural populations are included in efforts to remove barriers to access and use of clinical preventive services.
4.) Health care technology. Technologies including telemedicine offer promise of improved access to health care, but their most efficient and effective applications need further evaluation.
5.) Organization of services for vulnerable rural populations. Low population density in rural areas makes it inherently difficult to deliver services that target persons with special health needs. Groups at particular risk include: the elderly; the poor; people with HIV or AIDS; the homeless; mothers, children, and adolescents; racial or ethnic minorities; and persons with disabilities.
6.) Consumer choice and the rural hospital. Factors that drive changes in rural hospitals have a critical effect on consumer choice and access.

Significance of the Study
This study is of significance to several groups including:
Patients (both present and future)
Families of Patients
Communities
Insurance Companies

Vulnerable Population in the Workplace Project

The goal of your project is to identify barriers in the workplace to understanding vulnerable populations and affecting the disparity in promoting health care delivery. This project presents the opportunity to take course concepts and knowledge to your workplace to affect change and create new awareness to the realities of health disparities and barriers to health care that challenge wellness interventions.

Identify a barrier to decreasing a health disparity in a vulnerable population.

Evaluate your workplace for the presence of barriers in understanding vulnerability.

Use the action plan approved by your facilitator to complete this project.

Develop your action plan with the objective of increasing awareness of vulnerability based on culture, illness or disease, or a goal of Healthy People 2020.

? An audio or visual aid as a tool to your action plan
? Three integrated course concepts
? Other applicable materials such as the teaching aid, digital photos, a copy of the brochure, and an outline of the teaching plan, as appropriate

Write a 700- to 1,500-word report describing experience in the workplace. Describe the concepts that were the project?s focus, results, and possibilities for future change.

Include citations for at least four references

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Ethical Issues in Global Health
Anabel Ruiz
Florida International University/NUR 4667 Nursing in Global Health Care Systems

Ethical Issues in Global Health

A)
I agree with the World Healthcare Organization that healthcare is a fundamental right and as such universal health care should be implemented allowing virtually all of the population in the United States (US) to have access to healthcare. The rationale for this is that in this manner, patients wouldn?t be denied coverage and more yearly physician visits means that a person who doesn?t want to go see a doctor about right leg pain and warmth because he already used up his yearly physical or simply because he has no insurance can prevent more costly and complicated procedures in the future and more importantly save the man?s life from a possible pulmonary embolism. Japan is a country that practices universal health care and as a result their populations as a whole have higher life expectancies than their counterparts in the US (World Health Organization, 2013).

B)
I believe every country should use their own resources to alleviate their nursing shortage. Developed countries should provide more incentives for their own people to study nursing such as paying for their education and facilitate new nurses in obtaining jobs. In India alone, ?2.4 million nurses will be needed by 2012 to provide a nurse patient ratio of one nurse per 500 patients? (Senior, 2010). If this is the case, why should more developed countries take away nurses that are critically needed in these less developed countries? My opinion is that once developed countries have resolved their nursing shortage, they can then use their resources to aid developing countries in educating new nurses or funding money to nursing programs so that the people that want to become a nurse but can?t afford it are able to do so. Also, developed countries can provide an incentive to send nursing educators to developing countries to help with their nurse educator shortage.
