RESEARCH PROPOSAL

TOPIC: AN EVALUATION OF THE BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANACE OF ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PLC FROM 1ST JANUARY 2009 TO 31ST DECEMBER 2011, USING EXXONMOBIL AS ITS MAJOR COMPETITOR.

Core Books
Saunders, Lewis and Thornhil (2005), Research Methods for Business Students, Sage

Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this assignment you will be able to:
? Analyse critical components of research methods, from design, techniques, values and methods;
? Identify research methods for producing empirical data analysis, qualitative research outputs;
? Demonstrate critical evaluation of a research proposal and appreciate the limitations of research;
? Evaluate the quality of research designs when commissioning research;
? Work towards and complete a successful Master level research project.
Introduction
?Before you start your research you need to have at least some idea of what you want to do. Without being clear about what you are going to research it is difficult to plan how you are going to research it (Saunders et al, 2003).
The quote below illustrates the above points:

This is part of Alice?s conversation with the Cheshire Cat. In this Alice asks the cat (Carroll, 1989:63-4):
?Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to walk from here??
?That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,? said the Cat.
?I don?t much care where, ?said Alice.
?Then it doesn?t matter which way you walk,? said the Cat. (Saunders et al, 2003)

Formulating and clarifying the research topic is the starting point of your research project (Ghauri & Gronhaug, 2002; Smith and Dainty, 1991). Once you are clear about this you will be able to choose the most appropriate research strategy and data collection and analysis techniques. The formulating and clarifying process is time consuming and will probably take you up blind alleys (Saunders and Lewis, 1997). However, without spending time on this stage you are far less likely to achieve a successful project (Raimond, 1993)

The case for this module is about BP and its efforts to transform the organization through the IT function. It's a complex case, but interesting in that the efforts at transformation always brings us back to the basic question of how an IT strategy can add to the bottom line. The following paper describes the efforts undertaken in that company during the 1990's:

Cross, J., Earl, M. J. and Sampler, J. L. (1997) TRANSFORMATION OF THE IT FUNCTION AT BRITISH PETROLEUM, MIS Quarterly, December 1997 [available at TUI library]

It would also be useful to take a look at the following framework for looking at how information is used and value created:

Cost of Losing Information: A Framework for Information Management Planning. http://cdad.tuiu.edu/Presentation.aspx?course=684&term=93&presentation=588

As noted earlier, you should also consult material from the Background Readings or related other materials you find yourself (be sure to reference properly whatever specific sources you draw on). You may want to do some searching in the project management support websites (some linked in the Background Information).

When you've read through the articles and related material, scanned the websites, and thought about it carefully, please prepare a short (4-5 page) paper discussing the question:

"How can/does Information Technology help in creating business value?"

Provide examples from the BP case, from the suggested reading and also from your own research.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

Assume that you are a researcher working in a multinational company (it is easier if the company is fictional) based in Country A (a developed country), and that you are asked by your chief executive officer (CEO) to write a report on doing international business in Country B (a developing country).

In the report, you must analyse various aspects of the international business environment (see below) and provide a recommendation on whether your company should engage in trade and/or investment in Country B and how. You may if you wish make Country A a developing country and Country B a developed country.

It is sensible to decide on real countries for Country A and B and a real industry for the firm (e.g. textile manufacturing). Note: these are only examples.

You can select any countries and any industry that you wish. It is sensible to select countries and industries for which it is easy to obtain the data that you will need. For your own benefit, you should define what your firm does narrowly and clearly (e.g. a laptop manufacturer is much better than a computer firm).

Issues to be considered in the report:

a) An analysis of the national business system and cultural conditions in Country B with an assessment of how this will affect your firm within its industry.

You should keep in mind the national business system and cultural conditions in Country A so that you have accounted for the major differences between the systems that the firm operates in from the one it is considering operating in. When considering cultural conditions, you should avoid focusing exclusively on Hofstedes, Trompenaars or Halls frameworks and instead draw on a more diverse set of readings about national culture. Also avoid general analyses of national business systems and cultural conditions and instead provide an analysis that is relevant for your chosen industry and firm.

b) An assessment of the pattern and trends of trade between the two countries, especially in your selected industry, and also consideration of the type and level of protection measures against imports and foreign investment in Country B within your industry.

In this section you should indicate, in the light of the trade patterns and the level of protection, what type of competitive advantages your firm would need to be successful in Country B. Note: you need to keep in mind the industry that you have selected for your company.

EITHER
c1) An outline of the exchange regimes that govern Countries A and B with an assessment of the risks this poses for your firm.

You should highlight measures that may be used to reduce these exchange rate risks.

OR

c2) An assessment of the implications of international institutions such as the WTO, EU, NAFTA for the firms proposed business links with Country B.

In this section you should apply the implications of the work of the international institutions for a firm in Country A doing business in Country B.

d) Advise on whether the firm should export or use foreign direct investment, or a combination of these means, to do effective business in Country B.

In this section you should discuss what type of exporting and/or foreign direct investment should be used.

EITHER
e1) Advise on the type of political risks that the firm may encounter in Country B and on ways to reduce these risks.

OR

e2) Advise on the problems of establishing and operating a corporate social responsibility policy covering business with Country B.

Please note that any discussion of the points above has to be relevant to your chosen firm and industry. At the end of the report you should come up with clear and well-grounded recommendations for your chosen company on whether it should engage in trade and/or investment in country B.

The report should contain a clear introduction and a conclusion, summarising your recommended trade/investment strategy for your company.

GUIDELINES
Your assignment ??" some help and pointers for you.
I thought that it would be helpful if you could all bear in mind the following points when preparing your projects.
1) Avoid using lazy English or imprecise expression. For example, please avoid ending sentences with the word etc.
2) When quoting an authority, the reference, for example (Hill, 2010), should be immediately after the end of the quotation. For further information on referencing please see the Effective Learning Services booklet entitled References and Bibliographies. This is available in hard copy or via this link: http://www.brad.ac.uk/acad/management/external/els/pdf/refandbib.pdf from the School of Management website.
3) Diagrams and tables, including the title, should be on a single page.
4) You should briefly explain to your audience what the diagram is illustrating.
5) Avoid using diagrams, tables and theories where they are irrelevant or there is no connection to the rest of your project.
6) The Executive Summary should come before Introduction.
7) The Executive Summary enables the top management (CEO) to have an idea of what you did, why and how you did it, the outcome and your recommendations. This is a summary of the whole project and one to two paragraphs are enough.
8) The Introduction helps the reader to understand why you are doing the research and how carried it out. One paragraph of up to ten lines or so is enough.
9) The Conclusion is a summary of what you did, the findings and the recommendations.
10) There is no need to highlight some points by putting them in bold type.
11) Please observe the word limit. The good news is no more than 3500 words required for this project and this excludes reference, diagrams, tables and appendices (See the ELS booklet entitled Report Writing. This is available in hard copy or via this link: http://www.brad.ac.uk/acad/management/external/els/pdf/reportwriting.pdf).
12) Remember to include a list of your references at the end of the report (See the ELS booklet entitled Report Writing. This is available in hard copy or via this link: http://www.brad.ac.uk/acad/management/external/els/pdf/reportwriting.pdf).
13) Paragraphs should be more than five lines and not more than twenty lines. In short they should be reasonable.
14) The assessors are interested in how you analyse the national business system and culture conditions in Country B with an assessment of how this will affect your firm within its industry, please note in the Country B (See the ELS booklet entitled Report Writing. This is available in hard copy or via this link: http://www.brad.ac.uk/acad/management/external/els/pdf/reportwriting.pdf).
15) An assessment of the pattern and trends of trade between the two countries, especially in your selected industry, is important, as is a consideration of the type and level of protection measures against imports and foreign investment in Country B within your industry. You should also state the type of competitive advantages your firm would need to be successful in Country B (See the ELS booklet entitled Report Writing. This is available in hard copy or via this link: http://www.brad.ac.uk/acad/management/external/els/pdf/reportwriting.pdf).
16) Your project should be clear (readable English with correct spellings), numbered and have headings.
Hope this is going to help you to prepare a well researched and written project.

Assignment 2 Details

There are three specific issues for assignment 2.

? Development of future objectives for the organization,
? Proposed business strategy and,
? Specification of appropriate strategic actions.

As the unit information and unit assessment documents indicate, assignments 1 and 2 can be based on the same organisation. The external environment and industry analysis (focus of assignment 1) should lead to a clear identification of appropriate opportunities and/or threats for the organisation. Based on this information, you should be in a position to clearly articulate future objectives for the organisation. It is important to note that these objectives should be objective, realistic and measurable. You should also indicate the timeframe for achieving the stated objectives.

The second part of this assignment requires you to select and justify appropriate business strategy to achieve the objective stated in previous section of the assignment.

The last part of the assignment refers to strategic actions including specific actions that you believe should be taken to implement the chosen business strategy and also to achieve the objectives. These actions may relate to the functional strategy of the organisation. While there are many functional aspects of an organisation (marketing, HRM, finance etc), you may choose to focus on a particular functional strategy and actions. You should make a clear statement of your intent in case you wish to focus on a particular aspect of the functional strategy.

Note:
I have written Opportunities and threat on the basis of Assignment 1 as below:

Woolworth limited has to follow government rules and regulations. Political factor is making both opportunities and threat for Woolworth limited. As Australian government apply Fair Work system that provides employee and other staff of getting maximum weekly hours, protections from unfair dismissal of employee, flexible working roaster, balance between work and family life, notice of termination and redundancy pay. All these facilities are motivating employees towards Woolworth such that employee are working with responsibility such that Woolworth has got opportunity to increase sales margin with better customers satisfactions. Recently government has announced stimulus package 2010 that has affect rise in interest rate that paused customers to spend in retailing, credit is tight, sales are flat that is leading to threat for Woolworth limited.

Economic factor such as taxation, government spending levels, interest rate, inflation rate, import/export ratios all are related with organisation profitable that affect both capital availability and cost, and demand. Recently family budget has been hurt due to high interest rate and rise in fuel prices from $ 1.20 to $ 1.30 (per litre) is making more risk for Woolworth?s to meet their expected sales.

Social factors includes demand that varies with the population size, earning capacity of people that provide both opportunities and threat for particular organisations (Thompson, 2002: Pearce and Robinson, 2005). Woolworth limited always provides fresh and organic food keeping in mind about the customer?s health. And the strategy of selling fresh organic food and concerning towards customer?s health offers opportunity to sales their products among the customers.

Technology is also one of the key factors that help to make any business successful and this technology helps for the Woolworth limited to expect profit of 8-11% in 2010-2011. Woolworth strategy of providing online shopping among the customers has increased Woolworth sales rate to 59% for the year 2010. Everyday rewards program provide customers to registered their membership and get discount on fuel which is providing opportunities for Woolworth to increase their sales.

All these factors are focusing on Woolworth?s opportunities to increase their sales margin. And Woolworth expect of net profit of 8-11% in 2010-2011.

Note:

Write a five-page paper describing the importance of your major, and the impact that society may encounter should your major become obsolete.

Select an individual to interview that has at least 20 years of professional experience in your major, in this case (Business management),and who has experienced highs and lows as a result of the profitability and economic recessions such as the one weve recently experienced. ( maximum of 10 questions )

Helpful Hints for Preparing Interview Questions:

Questions are the heart of any interview. In an effort to conduct an effective interview, and to ensure the most appropriate questions are asked, you must first consider the purpose of the interview. Three questions that might assist you determining the purpose of your interview are:

1. Why am I conducting interviews rather than gathering information from other sources?

2. How will the data collected from the interviews be used, and in some cases, protected?

3. What are the anticipated results once the interview(s) are complete?

After determining the purpose of your interview, and conducting the appropriate research (if any), and selecting interviewees, it is time to put together your Interview Guide. This Guide will include all the questions and possible probes you will ask in the interview. This is your roadmap that will assist you in gathering the information you seek, as well as developing a productive relationship with your interview.

Phrasing the Interview Questions

In the information interview, you want to ask questions that will elicit the information you need. Carefully-worded questions can motivate interviewees to answer freely, accurately, and thoughtfully. There are five factors in phrasing questions that can help or hinder the interview process:

1. Language ??" Use words that interviewees will understand. Be specific, precise, and concrete. Watch for words that sound similar and might cause confusion. Avoid language that will offend or insult the interviewee. (Your purpose is to gather information from your interviewees, not to promote your own beliefs or agenda.)

2. Relevance ??" Interviewees must understand the relevance of questions asked. Every question must be asked with the purpose of the interview in mind. Questions must be asked in logical order (i.e., group questions about the same topic together).

3. Information Level ??" Do not ask questions for which interviewees do not have the information. Do not ask questions that will insult the interviewees intelligence.

4. Complexity ??" Phrase questions so they are simple, clear requests for limited amounts of information. Use simple, not simplistic, language. Do not ask multiple questions, such as, How and why did you begin your photography career? or What movies have you seen lately? How would you rate them and why?

5. Information Accessibility ??" Situational constraints, such as a noisy room or lack of privacy, may inhibit interviewee from providing the information you need. Psychological restraints, such as strong emotions associated with a question, may also inhibit an interviewee from providing the information you need.

The paper should include the following sub-sections: Introduction, Background of Major, the Individuals Professional Experience, Personal Experiences that Provoked Second-Thoughts, a Ten-Year Outlook on Your Major, and Conclusion.

Your interview questions should be developed to support each section of the paper. Though your paper has a subject, create a unique sub-topic that might clearly describe what your paper is about. Include at least 5 references to support your opinions. Be critical, clear, and concise in your writing.

Answer BOTH questions

1. You are the owner of a small / medium sized business looking to extend its reach into new markets. The business could be an existing Bricks & Mortar Organisation but does not preclude Start-Up operations. The markets can be either local or international but positioning should be stated within the report. Using your knowledge of themes in the e-Business landscape, provide a structured report to assist with the development of the business to make best use available technologies.

You must produce a report that describes how the business will work. How will it manage its customers? How does it manage its suppliers? How does it make sure it is found by potential customers? How does it make money etc?
The industrial focus of the business must be stated and in addition be chosen from the following list: Retail Clothes Manufacturer, Automotive Manufacturer, Business Consultancy, Leisure & Tourism, Hospitality and the Entertainment Sector.

The expansion of the business is key to its survival and some thought to the expected benefits in time, cost etc. should be explored.

You are free to make any reasonable assumption you wish about the company, as long as you state what they are in your answer.

You will not need to talk about the actual hardware/technical solution used since that will be decided by other consultants. You must just focus on the basic business operating principles ensuring that the business makes the best use of the internet. Note that when you talk about an e-business concept you must describe what it is, how it works, what advantages and disadvantages it bring and how this company will use it. You may use examples from other businesses to make your explanations clearer. [50 marks]

2. Review the developments in mobile communication devices and highlight how they can be used to promote and improve information flow within a Global e-Business. [20 marks]

NOTE: There is a general rule in academic writing in that every fact should be supported by evidence that it is true. This is so other authors can build on your work with confidence. If things are stated that are not supported then they cannot be used in later argument. There are of course some places where presenting evidence is not necessary and these are things that are directly observable and common knowledge. For instance you can say The sky is blue and not have to give a reference but if you say The sky is blue because of Rayleigh scattering or the sky is blue with wavelength of X then you would need to refer to the paper that told you these facts. So please make sure that you use your sources correctly.

You also need to be critical. Just making statement of fact will get you few marks. You need to discuss what these facts mean and extract greater more generic truths from them.

Additional requirement
You have to answer both question, For question 1 is required around 3900-4000 words and question 2 is required around 1400-1500 words
You can make the assumption when it related to the information
Font arial size 11, 1.5 spacing
Use British English
Harvard Reference List is required
I prefer the source and reference from journal and article.

BELOW YOU WILL FIND MY APPROVED HYPOTHESIS THAT MUST BE INCLUDED IN THE RESEARCH PROJECT PAPER.

I WILL BE EMAILING THE SPECIFICS OF THE PROJECT AS GIVEN DIRECTLY FROM THE UNIVERSITY.

Hypothesis:
The study will attempt to disprove the myths of technology being out the reach of small businesses due to cost. Many small businesses have found there way onto the Internet but others have failed to make the move to use technology. One of the primary reasons is cost and the other is the lack of knowledge from managers on how to proceed with the process.
With the rise of the Internet, the opportunities are endless, a company uses the Internet to display information about its goods and services, and other companies take it one step further and sell its goods and services directly off the Internet. This leads to others questions that cannot go unanswered in writing this research proposal. Can a manager be expected to prosper a business if the technology tools are not available?

I need your writers to work their magic and give fantastic answers to the following three questions. Writing that displays unique insights, strategic thinking, and clear, concise answers that are supported are a huge plus.

From the assignment:

Business-Level Strategy

Please answer the following 3 questions as fully as possible, providing reasons for your position and supporting evidence/examples.

1. Why is a business choice of generic strategy so important to its long-term success?

***Writer, in class the generic strategies were discussed as cost-leadership, differentiation, and focus (niche).

2. This semester we discussed Porter's 5-Forces model to analyzing the external environment. Offer a suggestion or two to improve the model and explain how your ideas would make it better.

***Writer, our professor gave the following as the 5 forces: 1. Rivalry among competitors. 2. Threat of new entrants. 3. Threat of substitutes. 4. Bargaining power of buyers (customers). 5. Bargaining power of suppliers. We were also given the following suggestions when answering this question: 1. You may come up with a complication with the current model. 2. You may add an additional force if you like. 3. Is there something is there something that is too simplified? If so, what needs to be tweaked?

3. How can a business best leverage its distinctive competencies into competitive advantage?

***Writer, in class we were given the definition of distinctive competencies (which by the way is very similar to core competences) as business resources and capabilities that are the source of competitive advantage. It is something that is Valuable, Rare, Inimitable, and Non-Substitutable. If all 4 of these are not met, it is not a distinctive competency. We also discussed that distinctive competencies are rarely physical assets and that the goal is ultimately a long-term, sustainable advantage.
