C. Advanced Nursing Role Paper: (100 points - see separate guideline sheet)

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate the students ability to investigate, analyze, and synthesize information on a topic related to advanced nursing in the U.S. health care environment. The outcome of this assignment is to arrive at a rational and specific recommendation for a selected course of action. Students may wish to submit the paper for publication to a journal. Hence, a well developed and literature supported synthesis is strongly encouraged.

1. Select a topic related to advanced nursing and the objectives and content of the course that is of interest to the individual student.(This topic must be different than the topic the student selected for class presentation.)

2. Conduct a cursory search of available literature to get a view of what is available. (HINT: some topics are very cyclical and were popular for a brief time, so it may be necessary to go back in history to get several citations on a specific topic.)

3. When you have identified the topic you wish to explore and the perspective you wish to pursue, obtain the advice and counsel of the course instructor.

Use APA Manual (5th ed) format for paper. Papers will be kept to a 10 page limit.

Students will briefly present to the class the key findings and recommendations from their paper topic.

This paper explores the CNS and NP roles based on the historical background, current practice, and education. This paper also discusses the existing debate of the CNS versus NP roles based on presented literature, and provides the authors conclusions on merging the CNS and NP roles.

Intent: The purpose of this second assignment is to explore the relevance of course readings and discussions to date for your current nursing practice. There are three essential components to the paper that should be included, however, the way you develop these components will depend on the nursing practice experience shared, your interests and the relevant literature needed to support your analysis.

Following the introduction that conveys the meaning and purpose of your paper proceed in a manner that addresses the following sections:

Share a meaningful nursing encounter (2 to 3 pages) that takes your reader into the complexities of your nursing practice. Using the first-person (I), write a narrative (a story) about a recent or memorable nursing experience you have had. The term nursing practice experience is used broadly here to include practice related to direct patient care, educational and managerial practice with colleagues.

Write your story with yourself as the main character telling the story; tell your reader how the situation was experienced by you. Take us into your world?the context of your surroundings, the nursing concerns you attended to (aspects of the patient/colleague experiences), your nursing responses/actions (or non-actions) and your emotions. Some ideas for the types of stories are identified below, but if you have any questions or are uncertain about how to proceed, please seek guidance from your instructor.

The story you select will resonate with the types of stories shared by nurses in Benner (2001) and might include any of the following types of situations:
An incident in which you believe your nursing practice made a difference in the outcome of a patient, student or colleague. This incident does not need to be a dramatic event but may capture a moment when you gained important insights about the worries, concerns, experience or meanings of the recipient(s) of your care, e.g. patient, family, community, students, colleagues.

An incident in which things went unusually well, or alternatively, did not go as planned (breakdown). Some of our most powerful learning experiences take place when things do not go as expected or we become aware of something important only in its absence.

A very ordinary, seemingly typical encounter that captures the essence of your daily nursing world.

An incident you believe captures the essence of what it means to be a nurse.

A situation that was particularly demanding.
Identify the most salient domain of nursing practice (Benner, 2001) evident in your story. Begin by summarizing the meaning of this domain of practice and then provide examples from your story that provide the basis for your determination that it was evident and the most relevant. (1 page)
Select TWO of the following concepts to analyze your nursing practice: expertise (novice to expert), intuition, understanding of the lived experiences of care recipients, clinical judgment, unit environment and culture, or physician-nurse communication. This analysis will also be supported by citing relevant course readings. The nursing practice of focus can be the story above, or you may focus on some other aspect of your practice. (1-1 ? pages)
Develop a conclusion that identifies what you have learned about yourself as a nurse or the nature of your everyday nursing practice through the processes of developing the paper.

The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a model for planning and implementing change within an organization. It is important for many individuals to be represented in the process, especially the end users of the system or the employees who must live with the change. As informatics become more and more widespread throughout the health care field, collaboration between information technology (IT) professionals and health care practitioners is becoming increasingly important. The nurse informaticist is able to combine the perspective of the information technology side with the clinical nursing perspective.
While the titles and specific responsibilities of nurse informaticists vary across organizations and practice settings, the fundamental purpose of the role remains the same. Nurse informaticists synthesize their knowledge of how technology can improve health care with an understanding of clinical practice and workflow. This is why nurse informaticists can be instrumental in facilitating the SDLC for informatics in health care. For this Discussion, you examine the relationship between the nurse informaticist and the use of the SDLC.
To prepare:
Review the role of the nurse informaticist. Reflect on Chapter 1 of the Dennis, Wixom, and Roth course text and consider how the information about the systems analyst role translates into nursing and health care.
Consider a recent change in your organization related to the implementation of a new technology or system. How was this change handled? What was the general SDLC process? Who was involved, and what were the outcomes?
Identify whether your organization (or one with which you are familiar) has a formal title or position for the nurse informaticist. This position may be called by a different name, such as nurse informatics specialist or informatics analyst, so be sure to review the position description.
If your organization has a position for the nurse informaticist, what are the responsibilities of that position? If your organization does not have such a position, conduct research in the library and at credible online sources on the role of the nurse informaticist.
Reflect on the role of the nurse informaticist in the overall health care field. How is this position connected to the SDLC? Assess the benefits of having this specialized position within health care organizations and involving the nurse informaticist in the SDLC.
A recent change in our EHR was the adaptation of a different time out version. The problem was the nurses were not notified. We open up the EHR and the time out section was not there, a week later a new version showed up. the issue we were never notified of any of this changes and so were scrambling for answer which the managers and informatics specialists failed to provide us with.

Research and comment in own words on the 2 below separately.

1. A review of the literature on Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) is an essential part of my capstone project and included scholarly journals and authoritative databases as my primary sources.

Medication administration errors are especially concerning because they have a very low chance of being intercepted before resulting in patient harm when compared to errors in other stages. The Institute of Medicine estimates an incidence of one medication error per day for the average hospitalized patient. BCMA technology is recommended and increasingly implemented by US hospitals as one way to prevent and intercept medication administration errors.

Despite the success related to reduced medication errors after implementation of BCMA in hospitals and long term care facilities there are important fundamental problems and questions that remained unanswered pertaining to non-compliance and acceptance of the technology by nurses. It is important to understand what shapes BCMA acceptance and use by nurses (Holden, Brown, Scanlon, & Tzion-Karsh, 2012)

The objective is to identify predictors of nurses' acceptance of bar coded medication administration (BCMA). This information could be used to plan and implement a BCMA system that nurses will be more likely to accept and use appropriately.

This information will assist in promoting the need to properly measure, understand, and proactively shape clinical Nurses' perceptions of BCMA.

2. Healthcare is changing and so is the profession of nursing. ?A strong relationship exists between theory, research, and evidence-based practice; and these three entities are necessary to guide practice and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge? (Roberts, 2013). Throughout the literature that I have come across and practice, it is evident patient safety and quality initiatives are important and ways to improve them within the nursing profession. My project is on conflict management and strategies to enhance communication and develop a culture of teamwork in an organization. Realizing that communication can always be improved, I would like to use conflict management strategies and integrate them into educational purposes that nurse leaders can employ. Poor communication and conflict can increase medical errors, decrease the quality of patient care, and disrupt staff satisfaction/retention. The information gathered contributes to my knowledge base that nurse managers/leaders play a vital part in staff retention and satisfaction, which are correlated to patient safety and quality care. Also, that nurse leaders need organizational backing to be able to distribute actions such as training/education (Duffield, Roche, Blay, & Stasa, 2011). Thus, addressing relationships between nurses may enhance nurse performance and that organizations must be on board to improve communication and satisfaction in the nursing profession (Germain, & Cummings, 2010). Through the literature and course work I have gained a better understanding how crucial effective communication is and how detrimental conflict can be to staff, patients, and the organization. This is also something that I will take away and hopefully be able to enhance an organizational culture of enabling empowerment of nurses to embrace conflict management strategies that foster a good work environment.

An important issue in nursing education, and one that has contributed to the nursing shortage, is the lack of qualified nursing faculty. Attracting, selecting, and retaining nursing faculty is an important job for all faculty members. As a faculty member of a new nursing program you have been given the job of developing a job description for new nursing faculty for the BSN program. The program needs faculty for all major nursing areas: medical/surgical, maternal/child, pediatrics, community health, and psych/mental health. You have also been asked to develop a guide for interviewing prospective candidates. Finally, you have been asked to develop a strategy for retaining nursing faculty in your program.

A. Develop a job description for nursing faculty (suggested length of 1 page). This may be a job description for any one of the specialties and may be for a position that is only theory, only clinical, or a combination of both theory and clinical. The job description should designate which type of position it is. Include the following in your description:
1. Position requirements (e.g., required education, experience, and scholastic endeavors and achievements)
2. Position responsibilities (e.g., expectations of job including amount and type of teaching/interaction with students, other program responsibilities).

B. Develop a candidate selection process for a nursing faculty position (suggested length of 1 page) in which you do the following:
1. Develop specific questions about education, degrees, nursing specialization, certifications, past clinical nursing experience, and scholastic endeavors and achievements.
2. Develop at least three open-ended questions that address the candidates philosophy and beliefs about nursing education, the role of nursing faculty, competency-based education, or other education styles.

C. Develop a faculty retention plan (suggested length of 1??"2 pages).
1. Support your plan by addressing issues that the current literature reports relating to nursing faculty turnover.

D. Include all in-text citations and references in APA format.

Discussion: Issues and Trends in Nursing Education

For this Discussion, you have the opportunity to investigate an issue or trend that is going to impact nursing education significantly in the years to come. You will share with your colleagues your understanding of what is at stake, your own views of the pros and cons of this issue, and suggestions on what you or others can do to bring about the most positive results in this area.

There are a great many topics that you might select to investigate. Review Chapter 6: Forces and Issues Influencing Curriculum Development (Billings & Halstead, 2012), as well as Healthy People 2010 and Institute of Medicine (IOM) reports, to remind yourself of important trends and issues that have been identified within the field of nursing education. Also review the following list of general and specific topics to help you develop your search topic.
Strategies for decreasing faculty shortage

Technology

Distance education

Promotion and tenure for academic educators

Career ladders in hospitals for patient or staff educators

Impact of Magnet criteria on education programs preparing RNs

Clinical Nurse Leader as proposed by AACN

DNP as professional doctorate

AACNs proposal to recognize only two doctorates: the PhD and DNP

Strategies for specific student or workforce populations (e.g., different ethnic groups)

Specific content to address changing healthcare system (e.g., CAM or terrorism)

Social forces impacting curriculum development

Online annual competencies in staff development

Certification as a nurse educator

Staffing mix (e.g., RN:LPN:CNA ratio)
Note: Students must investigate and post on different specific topics. When you have decided on your specific topic, such as the "determining guidelines for the ideal staffing ratio of RN:LPN:CNA," post this to reserve that topic for yourself. (An exception may be made if any two students wish to post on the same specific topic and the postings can take the form of a debate: one person in favor of a position, and the other opposing it. Students wishing to engage in this kind of debate must communicate with each other to determine who will take which side in the debate.) Do not reserve a general topic, such as "technology," as this will prevent your colleagues from selecting a specific topic in this area.

After selecting your topic, read at least three scholarly references on it. (You are welcome to use any of the course's Learning Resources, but you must locate at least two new references. Be sure to consult any official position statements and Web sites, for example the AACN, ANA, and NLN Web sites and JCAHO standards, that pertain to this issue or trend.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post your report on a significant issue or trend in nursing education, addressing the following:
Give a summary of the issue that is investigated.

Summarize what you found out and how this is significant to the future of nursing education.

Explain how this is likely to impact your own practice as nurse educator.

Describe your views on this issue or trend. What are the pros and cons of the situation? What do you think can or should be done to bring about optimal results or conditions?

Support your statements with at least three professional references.

Your written assignments must follow APA guidelines. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this weeks Learning Resources and any additional sources. Refer to the Pocket Guide to APA Style to ensure your citations in the text and reference list are correct.

Task:

D. If you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.

Note: Please save word-processing documents as *.rtf (Rich Text Format) or *.pdf (Portable Document Format) files.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the attached Rubric Terms.

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.

MY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM IS HAND HYGIENE

Validity in Quantitative Research Designs
Validity in research refers to the extent researchers can be confident that the cause and effect they identify in their research are in fact causal relationships. If there is low validity in a study, it usually means that the research design is flawed and the results will be of little or no value. Four different aspects of validity should be considered when reviewing a research design: statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity. In this Discussion, you consider the importance of each of these aspects in judging the validity of quantitative research.
To prepare:
critique the validity and robustness of research articles surgical site infections : rigor and validity.
Read the method section of one of the following quasi-experimental studies (also located in this week?s Learning Resources). Identify at least one potential concern that could be raised about the study?s internal validity.
Consider strategies that could be used to strengthen the study?s internal validity and how this would impact the three other types of validity.
Think about the consequences of an advanced practice nurse neglecting to consider the validity of a research study when reviewing the research for potential use in developing an evidence-based practice.
