The statistics are sobering for new college graduates. According to one recent study, 48 percent of recent college graduates are currently employed in occupations that do not require a college degree. Unemployment remains high as does student loan debt. Although possessing a college degree still significantly increases the likelihood of a graduate obtaining a higher salary and increases his or her chances of employment, it is far from a guarantee, and choosing a marketable major is important. Engineering and computer science top the lists of best-paying majors. Nursing and finance are some of the most in-demand majors today, with unemployment figures well below 5 percent.
All of these highly marketable majors share a common characteristic: they are extremely challenging. When deciding upon a major, a student must weigh factors such as his or her current interests and aptitude, the amount of debt he or she has, and future job prospects. Many students change majors several times over the course of their education as they discover new things about themselves, or the economy changes.
